1:30-3:30pm Learning from the Masters

About this event

Starry Night

The first session of Learning from the Masters this season is Weds., Sept. 16, from 1:30 to 3 p.m., when we will each spend sixty minutes studying and painting a small portion of Vincent van Gogh's "Starry Night." How did he achieve those swirls? What colors were on his palette?

The goal is not to copy an entire painting, but to  improve observation skills by carefully noting color, light and techniques and transposing them to canvas or paper. This technique has been used for centuries as a way to improve technical fluency and engage deeply with an artwork.

After we've painted for a while we'll discuss what we found.

  • Was it fun?
  • Did you learn anything?
  • What was the most difficult part of this exercise?

Any medium is fine. Please remember this is a study,  not a finished work, and a small board (8x10 or 10x12), a notebook and your own paints, brushes, pencils or pastels are all you will need! Your iPad laptop would be helpful, too.

This members-only workshop is free, but we do need you to register so we have enough copies available!
